One cornerstone of IB education is thoughtful and engaging interdisciplinary study. ISD seventh grade MYP students recently completed an interdisciplinary unit between their English and Design classes. In English class, students read the novel The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, about a heroic young inventor who brought electricity to his Malawian village. Following this, students studied sources of renewable energy and learned about the needs of developing countries in their Design class. Using what they had learned in both classes, students then thoughtfully created their own businesses and products that addressed these global issues.

This culminated with the students giving presentations of their prototypes, done in the style of the Shark Tank TV show, complete with a panel of judges that ultimate determined if they would be willing to invest in the students’ companies. From solar powered ovens to wind powered emergency drones and more, the students had impressive businesses for the judges (which included local business leaders) to choose from!
